Holland & Knight is the eighth-largest law firm in the United States. With administrative headquarters in Lakeland, FL, the firm has over 2,000 networked employees in nine states and Mexico City. Eight hundred lawyers work with clients ranging from small-business entrepreneurs to multinational corporations. The firm is growing fast, too, in terms of employees, attorneys, and revenue. Expansion plans include offices in Asia and Europe.
Holland & Knight has attorneys specializing in 75 areas of law, from admiralty law to workers’ compensation. Often, several attorneys contribute to a particular consultation to best serve a client. Since the attorneys may be in different geographic locations, Holland & Knight’s travel costs are a big part of the company’s expenses. Some attorneys spend a few days a week in one office, and a few days in another. Upper-level managers travel frequently from one site to another. Additionally, trainers and trainees spend time on the road. For example, when a new piece of software is introduced, trainers often travel to a central site to be trained and then return to their home sites to teach end users. Obviously, travel is expensive and time-consuming, and attorneys, managers, and trainers who are on the road are less accessible to colleagues, clients, and end users. In 1997, managing partner Bill McBride proposed a broadcast-quality videoconferencing system to reduce travel expenses and improve accessibility. The system would connect all Holland & Knight sites. In addition to intracompany communication, clients could use the system to consult with Holland & Knight attorneys. Because the videoconferencing system would reflect on the prestige of the firm, video quality was a primary concern. Holland & Knight looked at some desktop video products running over LANs, but they were not impressed by the quality of the video. The company decided to pay for high-speed circuits connecting directly to high-end videoconferencing equipment in dedicated rooms to avoid fading, blurring, and out-of-sync sound.

Growing up, you were probably taught that hard work and dedication would get you to the top, and that you would be paid what you were worth if you did your job well. This works fine, but wouldn't you like to put yourself on the next level when it comes to earning power? You may be leaving money on the table if you don't take charge of your financial future now.
If you are currently employed, don't be afraid to ask for that raise you deserve. Most of us wait to be given a raise, but you can do a lot better if you do some research, lay out a case for yourself, and ask for what you want. It costs a company much more to hire and train a new employee than it does to keep a good one on staff.
"The key is to make a good case for yourself all the time," says Bill Coleman, Senior Vice President of Compensation at Salary.com. "Be your own agent and, to some degree, a self-promoter."
If you've been in your job for a number of years and your company has recently hired new staff in similar functions, you may be entitled to an equity adjustment. Ask your supervisor or HR representative to review your salary relative to the new hires. You may find that staying in one job for too long has caused your salary to fall behind average industry pay scales. Your compensation manager may deem it necessary to give you a bump in salary to bring your pay in line with others.

Why is the market so schizophrenic? Computer-driven trades and investors focused on short-term moves have changed the game
Based on the way higher oil prices whacked the stock market Aug. 4, you might think crude had popped by $5 a barrel. The Dow Jones industrial average plummeted 163 points that day, in a move largely attributed to light sweet crude reaching a record high of $44.41 a barrel in the cash market. The truth, however, is that oil had been trading right around $44 all week. Sure, that's high. But the dramatic one-day drop in the stock market had more to do with the fact that many large institutional investors programmed their computers to sell stocks when oil climbed above $44, observes Larry Peruzzi, a trader at The Boston Company Asset Management. "Does it seem rational that stocks would perform poorly if oil continues to climb? Yes," says Peruzzi. "But does it seem rational that an arbitrary number would have such an impact? No." A few months ago, $37 was triggering program trades, he noted. "Now $44 is the magic number."

Many people these days are looking for ways to "make money on the Internet". These are not people looking to take their bricks-and-mortar business online to expand, or sell things they have manufactured, but instead people who are looking to create revenue from having a website.
It's not an impossible goal, but it's not as easy as the spam e-mail you receive would have you believe. It takes real work, just like any other business, and the rewards can be somewhat shaky if you are depending on free traffic from the search engines to build your business. But done correctly, there are some tried and true ways to make your website turn a profit. Valuable Resource
The very first thing you must do is make your site a resource. You've heard it before most likely-- what does it mean?
It means making your site useful to a specific audience- it could be a local portal site, a specific brand of car enthusiast site, a craft or hobby site, or even a political opinion site. The best thing to do is turn something you love into a resource site- you may be devoted to the conservation of a river in your area or have great ideas for keeping kids occupied during the summer-- build a site around your unique knowledge and ideas.

Economics Deciding how to finance your business depends upon your personality, business type, and level of discipline -- and your patience
When it comes to financing options, the debate is usually between debt and equity. In equity financing, one gives up control of the business to have the opportunity to grow faster, whereas with debt financing one keeps control, but risks growing more slowly. If your business is highly capital intensive or research-driven -- for example, if you want to roll out a national chain of tea parlors or develop a cutting-edge killer app -- then you may need the deep wallets of an acquiescent venture capitalist. However, if you can slug it out and grow organically without selling your first-born, then you may want to carefully consider the alternatives before taking the equity plunge. The key is avoiding the desperation that might prompt you to rush into an arrangement that could be premature.

Every brand from Mercedes to Mercury wants a full line of cars and trucks. It's a marketing nightmare and confuses buyers. How is this good for business? When i was a boy my mother would slice a few Florida oranges and make orange juice. Later someone invented frozen juice. Next came the plastic-coated cartons of orange juice that tasted a lot like Mom's.
Then a torrent of variations started. Cartons From Concentrate and then Not From Concentrate. No Pulp, Some Pulp and then Lots of Pulp. Calcium and Vitamin D Enriched and then Low Acid. Then they began subdividing the flavors. Orange/tangerine, orange/strawberry/banana, orange/pineapple, orange/peach/mango. What used to be so simple is now ridiculously complicated. I see a similar excess in the auto industry. One publication, Automotive News, counts 267 nameplates. (A Ford Expedition is a separate nameplate from a Ford Explorer, but not from an Explorer Eddie Bauer.) Auto-Pacific, a market analysis company, counts nameplates slightly differently but reaches a similar conclusion. Its chart goes from 33 nameplates in 1947 to 208 in 2000 to a predicted 274 in 2009.

Pablo Neruda
