Wikipedia defines social networking as "A social network is a social structure made of nodes (which are generally individuals or organizations) that are tied by one or more specific types of relations, such as financial exchange, friends, kinship, dislike, trade, web links, sexual relations, disease transmission (epidemiology), or airline routes..." I just like it, in these communities, an initial set of founders sends out messages inviting members of their own personal networks to join the them. Here an interesting article from PC World.
