This Pocket-Sized Synth Uses Dial-up Internet Tricks to Share Sounds and Songs


For electronic musicians who still like being able to perform with dials and buttons, Teenage Engineering’s Pocket Operators are miniature synths that manage to pack a tremendous amount of functionality into a tiny package. And that now includes the ability to import and export sounds and patterns with the new PO-32 Tonic synth.

Developed in collaboration with Magnus Lidström, who contributed to the original versions of the Pocket Operators, and wrote a software drum machine and percussion synthesizer for Windows and Mac called Microtonic, Teenage Engineering’s new PO-32 Tonic shares part of its name because it’s essentially a hardware version of Magnus’ app.

As with the other Pocket Operators that have been available since 2015, the PO-32 Tonic features 16 sounds, 16 different punch-in effects, a sequencer that can chain up to 64 patterns, a full month of battery life on just a pair of AAs, a charming old-school segmented LCD display (with a clock), and the ability to sync with other Pocket Operators for jam sessions with friends, or just creating a more complex beat.

What sets the PO-32 Tonic apart from past Pocket Operators is the new version now has the ability to import and export sounds and patterns via its 3.5-millimeter line-in jack, or through its new built-in microphone. The PO-32 Tonic is actually designed to work with Magnus Lidström’s Microtonic software, allowing the desktop app to be used to tweak sounds, effects, or generate patterns that can be digitally transferred to the tiny synth using audible sounds reminiscent of dial-up internet.

Remember those weirdly-satisfying garbled sound effects your modem made as it logged on to the early version of the world wide web? The new PO-32 Tonic does the same thing to transfer data between units or a computer, so you don’t need to keep USB cables on hand, or rely on a battery-draining wireless connection.

The PO-32 Tonic synths can also talk to each other in the exact same way, allowing users to easily share sounds and patterns between units, which should make the newest Pocket Operator the best way to actually learn how to use the tiny synths.

As for pricing and availability? On its own the PO-32 Tonic will be available starting the first week of April for $90, but if you want to get your hands on one earlier, there’s also a version of the new PO-32 Tonic that comes bundled with the Microtonic software for $140 available starting tomorrow.

New Google feature will change how you search forever


Google has introduced a potentially game-changing update for its Android app that provides offline features for its search results. 

Searches made while offline will now be saved and automatically run as soon as the the device gets an internet connection again. 

This is particularly useful when faced with a spotty or unreliable data connection, as millions of frustrated mobile users can atest. 

“So the next time you lose service, feel free to queue up your searches, put your phone away and carry on with your day. The Google app will work behind-the-scenes to detect when a connection is available again and deliver your search results once completed,” Google product manager Shekhar Sharad wrote in a blog post

Sharad said the feature “won’t drain your battery” and will “minimally” impact data usage.

Any pending searches will be stored in the Google app under the Manage Searches option.

People in the US and Canada spent over $53 billion on marijuana in 2016

People in North America spent $53.3 billion on legal, medical,
and illicit marijuana in 2016. That’s more cash than Americans
blow in a year at McDonald’s and Starbucks combined.

According to a new report from Arcview Market
, a leading publisher of marijuana market research,
the black market is losing ground to its legal counterpart
as consumers spend more money each year on legal cannabis.
Progress is slow, however.

The North American legal weed market posted $6.7 billion in
revenue in 2016, up 30% from the year before. The illicit market
generated 87% of total pot sales, down from 90% in 2015.

The numbers suggest the legal marijuana industry is growing
quickly, but it has a ways to go before it topples the black
market, which has the lion’s share of revenue.

2016 was a big year for weed. Seven US states
legalized cannabis in some form on Election Day. California, the
sixth-largest economy in the world, became the biggest domino to
fall with the passage of Proposition 64. Much of the West

Troy Dayton, CEO of Arcview Market Research, credits
consumer spending on the black market with creating a runway for
growth in the legal market.

“The enormous amount of existing, if illicit, consumer spending
sets cannabis apart from most other major consumer-market
investment opportunities throughout history,” Dayton said in a
statement. Unlike other fast-growing markets, which include
organic foods, home video, and mobile, “the cannabis industry
doesn’t need to create demand for a new product or innovation —
it just needs to move demand for an already widely-popular
product into legal channels.”

In an interview with Business Insider earlier this month, Dayton
said the sudden popularity of alternative ingestion methods —
such as weed-laced topicals, sprays, and edibles — also fueled
growth in the legal market. Consumers who would never smoke a
joint are finding relief in other products, which offer a wide
array of tastes, strengths, and experiences.

In Colorado, where cannabis has been fully legal since 2012,
these alternatives grew from 30% of total legal sales in the
first quarter of 2014 to 45% in the third quarter of 2016.

“It’s one of the major reasons that people are going to leave the
underground market to go to the aboveground market. It’s about
variety,” Dayton told Business Insider. “You just can’t get these
products on the underground market.”

Arcview projects legal sales will grow at a compound annual
growth rate of 26% through 2021, when the North American market
is expected to reach $21.6 billion.

By comparison, McDonald’s generated $35.5 billion in sales in
2015. Starbucks saw $13.3 billion in revenue that year,
